Those are impressive stats for a facility nearly three decades old, testament to the highly dedicated team keeping NSLS at peak performance and the high quality of its user community. In 2010, NSLS users and staff published close to 900 papers, with about 170 appearing in premiere journals. Every research project has the potential for accolades. Yonath of the Weizmann Institute of Science. Steitz of Yale University were sharing the 2009 Nobel Prize in Chemistry with Ada E. The year began with the news that NSLS users Venki Ramakrishnan of Cambridge University (also a former employee in Brookhaven's biology more ยป department) and Thomas A. Reflecting the quick pace of our activities, we chose the theme 'Discovery at Light Speed' for the directorate's 2010 annual report, a fiscal year bookended by October 2009 and September 2010. It is also a time of unprecedented growth for the Photon Sciences Directorate, which operates the National Synchrotron Light Source (NSLS) and is constructing NSLS-II, both funded by the Department of Energy's Office of Science. This is a very exciting period for photon sciences at Brookhaven National Laboratory. The name of the program was changed to reflect this commitment, becoming the Nuclear Test-Experimental Science (NTES) Program. During FY88 the program was reorganized to emphasize our commitment to experimental science. And it was exciting in that the sophisticated and fundamental problems of weapons science that are now being addressed experimentally are yielding new challenges and understanding in ways that stimulate and reward the brightest and best of scientists. It was rewarding in that revolutionary new measurement techniques were fielded on recent important and highly complicated underground nuclear tests with truly incredible results. It was significant in that the Laboratory's new director chose to focus strongly on the program's activities and to commit to a revitalized emphasis on testing and the experimental science that underlies it. Fiscal year 1988 has been a significant, rewarding, and exciting period for Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory's nuclear testing program.
